5 Villagers Rescued After Being Trapped in Flooded Laos Cave

(MENAFN) Five villagers who spent more than a week trapped inside a flooded cave system in central Laos have been brought to safety, authorities and international rescue teams confirmed, as search operations press on for two others still unaccounted for.

The ordeal began May 20, when torrential rainfall unleashed flooding and landslides that sealed the entrance to a cave in Xaysomboun province — where the group had reportedly ventured in search of gold ore. After days of grueling rescue efforts under punishing conditions, teams finally located five survivors alive on a rocky ledge approximately 300 meters inside the cave system.

The first survivor was extracted Friday, with four additional men brought to safety on Saturday. All rescued villagers have since been transferred for medical treatment and observation. Rescue officials confirmed that operations are now squarely focused on locating the two remaining missing members.

The high-stakes mission has mobilized an extraordinary coalition of expertise — drawing Lao, Thai, and international cave rescue specialists, including veteran divers who played pivotal roles in Thailand's globally watched Tham Luang cave rescue in 2018. More than 100 rescuers have participated in the operation, battling flooded passageways, unstable rock formations, and near-zero visibility throughout.

The Vientiane Times reported that teams worked around the clock — pumping water from the cave, clearing debris, and delivering food, drinking water, and emergency equipment to survivors — in a race against time complicated by the cave's remote location and relentless ongoing rainfall, which has hampered access to deeper sections where the remaining villagers may be sheltering.

Despite the daunting conditions, officials said rescuers remain hopeful that the missing men can still be found alive.

The operation has seized national attention across Laos and drawn sweeping comparisons to landmark cave rescues across Southeast Asia — a region that has witnessed some of the world's most complex and emotionally charged underground survival stories in recent years.
